The rehabilitation of the Rufo House explores how to inhabit a ruin. The original structure consisted of a ground floor and a basement, which were both in a state requiring demolition. The house was originally arranged as a series of interconnected rooms, leaving the central spaces dark and uninviting, compounded by the fagade’s small, secluded windows.

In the new design, the entire roof was removed, and the house was reimagined as a progression of three layers of privacy, light, and thermal comfort: open-air spaces, glass-covered spaces, and fully enclosed spaces. This sequence of transitions provides a balance between openness and shelter.

The rehabilitation aims to preserve as many original elements as possible, maintaining the traditional layout of interlinked rooms, which now serve multiple functions simultaneously.
The entry courtyard and the summer lounge patio, open to the sky, form the first filter of the house. The kitchen, located in the intermediate zone, features a glass roof, and a large window opens to the pool area, which occupies the space of the old bathrooms.
